A wide entry is a drawing problem before it's a door problem. Large front doors get built around the hole in the wall, which means the format comes first: two leaves, one leaf plus sidelights, a single pivoting leaf, or a full-open setup that folds or slides clear of the traffic path. Pick the format and the hardware follows. Pick the hardware first and you'll fight the opening for the rest of the project.
Some of what you're working with is fixed by code, not by taste. An egress door has to be side-hinged and give a clear width of at least 32 inches (813 mm), per the International Residential Code, and clear height runs 78 to 80 inches depending on which edition your inspector is holding. Those numbers set the minimum on the active leaf. Everything above and beside it, the transom, the sidelights, the fixed panel, is yours to divide.

How Oversized Openings Get Divided
Four formats cover most wide and tall entries, and the choice changes the hardware, the frame and the install.
Double Doors
A wide opening splits into two active leaves, or one active leaf with the second leaf held by flush bolts and opened only for furniture. The K80 large entrance aluminum double casement doors are built for this. Unequal leaves work when the opening is off-center.
Sidelights and Transoms
Width and height come from fixed glass, not from a wider swing leaf. A sidelight adds light and presence without adding weight to the hinge side. A transom lifts the head height without pushing the operating leaf past a comfortable reach.
Pivot Doors
One very wide or very tall leaf turns on a pivot rather than hinges. The floor and header carry the load, so plan both before you order. Good for a single dramatic entry, less good where you need a fast everyday swing.
Full-Open Formats
Leaves stack or fold to one side and clear the whole opening. Useful for a patio-facing entry, a showroom front, or anywhere you want the wall to disappear. Different mechanism, different threshold detail, so tell us early.

Measure the rough opening, not the old door. Take width at the top, middle and bottom, and height at the left, center and right, then use the smallest figure of each. Walls are rarely square and a large opening hides more error than a small one. Note the jamb or wall depth too, because that decides how the frame returns to the finished surface. If the opening is out of square, say so and send a photo. It's better to design around it than to discover it on delivery day.
Then tell us the format you want, the swing direction and the handing, and how the door will be used day to day. A buyer who wants a 5 ft pivot leaf for a main entry has a different brief from one who needs a 6 ft opening that clears furniture twice a year. Send a drawing if you have one, or a photo and a sketch if you don't. Our technical team reviews the measurement before production, and questions at that stage cost nothing.
On code, check your local edition early. The International Building Code sets a minimum clear opening height of 80 inches (2032 mm) for doors serving as a means of egress, and projections into the clear width between 34 and 80 inches above the floor are limited. Those rules shape where the active leaf sits and how wide it can be, so they belong in the first conversation, not the last.

What size is an oversize front door?
There's no fixed threshold. In practice, anything past a typical single residential entry counts as oversized, and the label matters less than the format. Once a leaf gets wide or tall enough that hinges, weight and floor clearance become the design problem, you're in double door, pivot or mullion-combined territory. What is the largest exterior door size?
We don't publish a maximum. Every unit is made to the measured opening, and the practical limit depends on the leaf weight, the hardware you choose and how the frame is fixed. A single leaf has a practical width limit before it needs heavier hardware or a different mechanism. Past that point the answer is usually two leaves, a pivot leaf, or a mullion-combined unit.
What is the widest standard front door size?
Standard sizes only exist for stock doors, and we don't sell stock. Our large front doors are made to the opening you measure, so the widest door we make is the widest opening you send us. That's why the measurement matters more than any catalogue number, and why we ask for three width readings and three height readings before quoting.
What are the trends for front doors this year?
Wider entries with more glass, taller head heights, and dark aluminum finishes. Pivot doors keep showing up on main entries because they handle a big leaf without a heavy hinge side.
